Straelen & Surroundings

Straelen (which, by the way, is pronounced ‘Straalen’, as in aardvark) is a small town on the Lower Rhine near the Dutch border. The town was first mentioned in a document in 1342 and is now home to around 16,500 inhabitants.

Straelen is also known as the ‘town of flowers’ because the world's largest flower auction is based here and there are many market gardens that surround the historic town centre.

On 28 November 1978, the town of Straelen was awarded the Silver Medal of the Munich Foundation for the Promotion of Writing for its support of the foundation of the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium.
